    I was on a job interview in Niles, MI the other day and the director in the lab told me "You draw blood like a nurse not a phlebotomist!" I am ASCP certified phlebotomy technician since 2013 and only had a few jobs because the pay scale is so low. So, what I did was use my right hand to do the straight stick on her and used my left hand to hold the holder in place and used my right hand to pop in and out the blood sample tubes. So, thee needle and holder was secure in her arm. I felt comfortable doing it this way but she than laughed and said "You draw blood like a nurse NOT a phlebotomist!" So, right then and there I was glad she did not hire me because she was too darn young to be a director of anything and the pay scale was crap! I could make more at Walmart stocking selves and not have all that responsibility! I know I did just fine but the interview was going to not be good because she looked like a little kid interviewing me. Now, I will definelty find a different hospital to have my blood work done! LORD HAVE MERCY!!!

    Thank you, this information is correct. So, patient identification and order of draw is most important because you can't draw Blood Collection tubes after a INR. or PTT. You would not believe how many people get so use to working in phlebotomy who draw the wrong tubes in sequence and when you tell them "hey, you are not following Order of draw" they get mad at the new kid on the block who follows hospital policies and procedures. So, CLSI is the method I use like you mentioned in your video and we use BD tubes and not so much the marbled tubes. So, we use lt. blu, red, gold, green, lavendar (EDTA) and gray. We only will use the other tubes for special test of trace elements with is navy blue topper tube. I call the tubes I use for the butterfly needles dummy tubes. There is a heck of a lot of information we have to know and the money better not be too much of a factor because here in Chicago, IL. I could make more at Mcdonald's!

    • @PhlebotomySolutions
      @PhlebotomySolutions Місяць тому

      Great question. The angle is always 15-30 degrees. You based the angle on your palpable vein that you feel. The more you press down on the arm for depth the further the needle will have to go. It takes practice and feel.

    Hi! Thanks for this video.. feedback; a question and a comment.. so you mention bending the patient arm to better feel the vein.. when you straighten out their arm though how do you know it isn’t moved?! I use a trick I was shown with the square alcohol wipe… you use the corner of it to POINT to where the vein is!

    • @PhlebotomySolutions
      @PhlebotomySolutions 2 місяці тому

      The idea of bending the elbow and turning it is to help you locate the vein in a general sense. You will still need to relocate it after, before drawing. You can also put a a mark from the cap of the needle before the alcohol. The small circle ⭕️ will help you remember where to draw.

    • @PhlebotomySolutions

      Great question. There are a number factors to consider. Needle placement could be off. The blood tube collector can be defective. The bevel of the needle could be inserted wrong. I have other videos that go into detail on why you are not getting blood flow from a butterfly needle.
